Located in the Atlantic Ocean, Gran Canaria (known as 'The Miniature Continent') is 130 miles from the African coast. Only 47 kilometres, (29 miles) wide, it is third largest of the Canary Islands with Fuerteventura and Tenerife as its neighbours. Its capital, situated in the north east of the island is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria although generally referred to as simply Las Palmas. The north of the island is usually cooler than the sunnier south.

Gran Canaria is the most mountainous of all the Canary Islands. The inner regions that are mountainous tend to be much more cloudier and cooler with more rain. Its landscapes also include flat and stunning plains and some extraordinary canyons. There are also the famous beaches and wide strands of sand that seem to go on forever.

Playa del Ingles is the main resort of Gran Canaria. It is the liveliest resort on the island and is renown for its climate and atmosphere.
