EL HIERRO - INTRODUCTION Introduction | Hotels | Dive Centres | Late Offers
Nicknamed Isla del Meridiano (The Meridian Island), El Hierro is the smallest and furthest southwest of the Canary Islands. This little island of only 287 square kilometres offers a landscape of great beauty, more than half of which is protected by the Natural Spaces Act. The island boasts spectacular cliffs of up to 1,200 metres high and twisted lava formations contrast sharply with the gentle rolling hills at its centre. The winter has temperatures of up to 19ºC and the summer has temperatures of up to 23ºC. El Pozo de las Calcosas is located between two beautiful natural swimming pools. Visitors are required to walk down a steep path at the end of which, they will discover an unspoilt area with houses carefully maintained by their current owners. The thatched roofs, dry stonewalls and the pretty gardens are amazing and give the visitor an insight into the time gone by. Situated in the lush and fertile north of the island, Mocanal is a town that is surrounded by green meadows and fields. This area is however often besieged by mist and rain. Valverde is the capital of El Hierro. It is the only Canarian capital that does not sit on the coast, located approximately 700 metres above sea level. It is divided into two sections; the Tesine and El Cabo areas which house the community's schools, courts, museums bars and restaurants.
